This legend can be traced back to the 9th century, when Alquézar was occupied by the Muslims.
The governor of the fortress had been ordering the Christians of the nearby villages to pay tribute to him with their maidens. Fed up with the situation, the Christians decided to devise a plan. One brave and beautiful maiden from Buera, was chosen and she agreed to carry out the plan.
After being left alone with the governor, sleepy after a long celebration, she quietly removed a dagger from her hair and slit his throat. With his blood she wet a white handkerchief and displayed it out the window. This was the signal that the Christians were waiting for in order to attack the castle. Such was the disarray of the Muslims, that before they could be captured by the Christians, they decided to throw themselves off the cliffs onto the bed of the canyon, riding horseback on blindfolded horses. And they say that to this day, sometimes you can still hear the screams of those soldiers.
