The most representative vegetation of the Somontano of Barbastro is the oak tree, which thrives on a climate marked by high temperatures and very dry summers, as well as cold long winter. The oak tree is usually accompanied by a large number of species, including boxwoods, labdanum trees, kermes oaks, mastic trees, and juniper trees, among others.
A good deal of the oak trees that used to cover the hillsides were burnt and cut down in order to use their wood, cultivate their fertile soils and produce charcoal.
Nowadays, the abandoned state of many areas, previously cultivated and used for grazing, has allowed for an increase in area occupied by this type of forest.
