The schematic cave art spans from the Neolithic era until the Metal Age and was the work of villages that were already familiar with agriculture and livestock farming.
In the hard to reach shelters there are painted human figures and very simplified animals, symbols, geometric shapes, spots and lines... through to realistic drawings. This synthesizing and abstraction shows the esthetic evolution of naturalist, post-Paleolithic paintings.
The interpretation of its meaning and purpose is difficult, with some writers attributing great religious and ritual significance to the symbols.
The schematic style is most prevalent in the River Vero Cultural Park and is present in the shelters of Mallata, Barfaluy, Gallinero, Regacens, and Lecina Superior.
