The city of Barbastro is the capital of the region of Somontano. Since its foundation in the 9th century by the Muslims, it has been marked by the presence of the River Vero. It occupies a strategic position, located halfway between the plain and the mountain, as well as having an abundance of water and fertile floodplains from the River Vero and Cinca. The conflation of these factors has made it possible for Barbastro to preserve intact its old commercial purpose and is a provider of all types of services to its neighbours, the surrounding villages and bordering districts.
The historical centre, declared of Cultural Interest, has numerous palatial buildings of interest from the 15th to the 18th century. The palace of the Argensola, “Casa Latorre” and “Casa Baselga” are some examples. It is well worth the effort to explore its streets and arcaded squares, such as the “Plaza del Mercado” (market square), where each Saturday local farmers gather to sell their produce.
The most emblematic monuments of the city are the cathedral from the 16th century and the episcopalian palace, where the “Museo Diocesano” (Diocesan museum) is located. Other highlights are the churches of San Francisco and Los Escolapios (Piarest church), numerous historical elements, and other museum centres and cultural facilities.
It also preserves vestiges of its Medieval past with monuments of great interest, such as the Arabic baths (11th century) and other archeological discoveries, as well as pre-industrial monuments such as the preserved “Pozo de Hielo” (ice well) and the Moliné building.
Next to the city, and in the upper part of the summit, the “Monasterio de El Pueyo” (monastery) is erected (13th to 17th century), a popular religious centre of devotion in the Somotano. The panoramic views that you can enjoy from this location are unbeatable.
